How Much Does It Cost to Bore a Water Line to Your Garage or Pole Barn?

Bill GaylordJune 7, 2026

If you're building a pole barn, finishing a garage, or adding a workshop on your property, one of the first questions is: how do I get water out there without tearing up my yard?

The answer is directional boring — and it's more affordable than most people think.

Typical Costs in Northern Michigan

For a standard residential water line bore (1" or 2" HDPE pipe), you're typically looking at:

  • Short runs (under 100 ft): $1,500 - $3,000
  • Medium runs (100-250 ft): $2,500 - $5,000
  • Long runs (250-500+ ft): $4,000 - $8,000+

These ranges include the boring, pipe installation, and connections on both ends. Every job is different, which is why we provide free quotes.

What Affects the Price?

Distance is the biggest factor — more footage means more time on the drill. But other things matter too:

  • Soil conditions: Sand and clay are straightforward. Rocky ground or hardpan takes longer.
  • Depth: Most residential water lines run 4-5 feet deep (below frost line). Deeper bores cost more.
  • Obstacles: Driveways, existing utilities, mature trees, or steep grades add complexity.
  • Pipe size and material: A 2" line for a heated shop costs more than a 1" garden supply line.
  • Access: Can we get a drill rig to the starting point? Tight access adds setup time.

Why Boring Beats Trenching

An open trench gets the job done, but it destroys everything in its path — lawn, landscaping, driveways, tree roots. With directional boring:

  • Your yard stays intact
  • No driveway cuts or repairs needed
  • Tree root zones are preserved
  • The job is typically done in a day
  • No restoration costs after the fact

What's Included in Our Quotes

When FiberNorth Underground quotes a water line bore, we include:

  • Locating existing utilities (we call MISS DIG)
  • Directional bore from point A to point B
  • HDPE pipe supplied and installed
  • Entry and exit pit excavation
  • Clean-up of the work area

You'll need a plumber to make the final connections inside the buildings — but we handle everything underground.
