What It Costs to Run Power to a Pole Barn in Northern Michigan
The short answer
For most pole barns in Northern Michigan, running power from the house to the barn breaks into three costs: the electrician's work at both ends, the wire and conduit itself, and getting that line underground. The underground part is where quotes swing wildly. A typical 100-foot directional bore runs $3,000, done in a day, with your lawn untouched. An open trench for the same run can quote cheaper up front and end up costing as much or more once you pay for restoration, and you'll look at the scar until next summer.
Here's how the whole number comes together, so you can budget the project instead of guessing.
What actually goes into the price
1. The electrical work
You'll want a licensed electrician for the panel work: a breaker in your main panel, a subpanel in the barn, and the connections at both ends. For a typical 60 to 100 amp subpanel, most homeowners in our area see $1,500 to $3,000 for this piece, depending on the panel and how much circuit work the barn needs inside. Lights and a few outlets are one thing. A welder and a car lift are another.
2. Wire and conduit
Wire is priced by the foot, and the size depends on amperage and distance. Longer runs need heavier wire to handle voltage drop. For a 100 amp feed at a few hundred feet, wire and conduit commonly land between $3 and $10 per foot in materials. Your electrician will size it. One tip that saves money later: have a larger conduit installed than the wire strictly needs. Pulling a bigger wire through existing conduit someday is cheap. Installing new conduit twice is not.
3. Getting it underground
This is the part we do, and the part where people overpay without knowing it. You have two options.
Open trench. A trencher cuts a slot from the house to the barn, the conduit goes in, and the trench gets backfilled. Machine and labor for 100 feet might run $800 to $1,500. Sounds fine, until you add what the quote leaves out: hand digging around tree roots, cutting and repouring the driveway if the line crosses it, repairing the sprinkler lines the trencher finds, then backfill, compaction, topsoil, and seed. Realistic all-in totals run $2,300 to $6,000, and the dirt stripe across your lawn stays there for months.
Directional bore. We dig a small pit at each end, bore a path underground between them, and pull your conduit back through. The driveway, the maple tree, the septic field, and the lawn never know we were there. A typical 100-foot bore is $3,000, one price, done in a day or less.
Why depth doesn't change our price
Electrical code sets minimum burial depths, commonly 18 to 24 inches depending on whether the wire runs in conduit. Your inspector has the final say. With a trench, deeper means a wider cut, more spoil to haul, and a bigger bill. With a bore, depth is just where we steer the drill head. Deeper costs the same. That matters in Northern Michigan, where going a little deeper than minimum is cheap insurance against frost heave and future landscaping.
A realistic total for a typical project
- Electrician, panel and subpanel work: $1,500 to $3,000
- Wire and conduit, 100-foot 100 amp feed: $300 to $1,000 in materials
- Underground installation by directional bore: $3,000
Call it $5,000 to $7,000 for a clean, permitted, inspected 100-foot power run to the barn, with zero yard restoration on the back end. Longer runs cost more, mostly in wire. Every property is different, which is why estimates are free.
Don't skip these two steps

Permits. Underground electrical work gets permitted and inspected through your local building department. Your electrician typically pulls this. It protects you when you sell the house, and it keeps the insurance company happy if anything ever goes wrong.
How the day actually goes
We show up in the morning and dig two small pits, one near the house and one at the barn. The drill head enters at a shallow angle, follows the path underground at the right depth, and surfaces in the exit pit. We attach your conduit and pull it back through the bore. Pits get filled, the site gets cleaned up, and we're gone by afternoon. Your electrician makes the connections, the inspector signs off, and the barn has power. Mow the lawn that evening if you feel like it.
