How Directional Drilling Works (Explained Without the Jargon)

The short version

A directional drill sits at one end of the run and pushes a steel drill rod under your yard, steering around anything in the way. When the rod pops up at the far end, we attach your pipe or conduit and pull it back through the path we just made. Two small pits, one line installed, and the grass in between never knows we were there.

Step 1: The utilities get marked

Before anyone drills, MISS DIG (Michigan's free 811 service) marks the buried gas, power, and phone lines on your property. We schedule this — you don't have to do anything. The paint and flags show us what to avoid.

Step 2: We expose anything questionable

Marks tell you a line is near, not exactly where. If the bore path crosses a gas service or your septic tank sits somewhere in the middle of the route, we use a hydrovac — basically a precise vacuum with a water wand — to expose the line and see it with our own eyes before the drill gets close.

Step 3: The pilot bore

The drill pushes a rod with a steerable head into the ground at a shallow angle. A crew member walks the path above with a locator that reads the head's exact depth and position every few feet. Need to duck under a gas line, stay below frost depth, or curve around a big maple's roots? The head steers — that's the "directional" part.

Step 4: Reaming and pullback

When the rod comes up in the exit pit, we swap the head for a back-reamer sized for your pipe, attach the product, and pull it back through the bore. Water line, electrical conduit, gas, fiber, irrigation — anything up to 10 inches in diameter. The hole is only as big as it needs to be, and the soil around it stays put.

Step 5: Cleanup

We connect nothing to nothing — your plumber or electrician handles hookups — but the bore itself is done: two small pits filled back in, and a line sitting at proper depth under an untouched lawn. Most residential bores are complete in a day or less.

What it looks like in your yard

  • A pit at each end — usually a couple feet square, filled and tamped when we leave.
  • The drill and a support truck parked at one end — we need surprisingly little room.
  • Everything between the pits: untouched. No trench, no tire ruts through the garden, no pile of dirt on a tarp.

Why this beats digging

A trench turns your whole run into a construction zone — and the restoration (backfill, compaction, grading, topsoil, then seed or sod) is where the real cost hides. A bore skips all of it. A typical 100-foot bore runs about $3,000 installed, done in a day or less.
