How Long Does a Directional Drill Job Take?
Bill GaylordJune 1, 2026
When homeowners call about a boring project, one of the first questions is: "How long is this going to take?"
Good news — most residential jobs are done in a single day. Here's a more detailed breakdown.
Typical Timelines
- Simple residential bore (under 150 ft): 2-4 hours on site
- Medium residential bore (150-400 ft): 4-6 hours on site
- Complex bore (obstacles, road crossings, rocky soil): Full day
- Multi-line installations: 1-2 days
- Commercial/long runs (1,000+ ft): 2-5 days depending on scope
What Happens on Job Day
Here's the typical sequence for a residential bore:
- Setup (30-60 min): We trailer in the drill rig, position it at the entry point, and set up the mixing system (bentonite mud that lubricates the bore).
- Pilot bore (1-3 hours): The drill head goes underground and we steer it to the exit point. This is the main event — we're navigating underground, avoiding obstacles, and maintaining depth.
- Ream and pull back (30-90 min): We enlarge the pilot hole and pull the pipe back through in one continuous pull.
- Clean-up (30-60 min): Pack up equipment, clean any drilling mud from the surface, restore the entry/exit pits.
What Can Slow Things Down
- Rocky soil or cobble: The drill head has to work harder and progress is slower
- Existing utilities: We may need to adjust the bore path to maintain safe clearance
- Wet conditions: Saturated soils can be unstable and require careful mud management
- Access issues: Tight spaces mean smaller equipment and more setup time
- Depth requirements: Deeper bores (under roads, for frost protection) take more time
Before Job Day
The actual boring is just part of the process. Before we show up:
- MISS DIG locates are called in (3 business days lead time)
- Any permits are pulled
- We've reviewed the site and planned the bore path
- Materials are sourced and ready
From first phone call to completed job, most residential projects are done within 1-2 weeks — the lead time is usually in scheduling and MISS DIG, not the work itself.
